unearth mines histories of desire and loss, recasting the black box theater as parietal underground.

unearth began with the discovery of a series of black and white photographs published in the Sandy Gazette of doomed mining ventures in the Oregon wilderness. In the early 20th century Welches Oregon, homesteaders looking to stake their claim in the ever exploited gold rim on the Pacific Coast, dug a series of small mines along the foothills of Mt Hood. Enticed by the prospect of a shiny flake surface in the stone – pyrite, colloquially known as fool’s gold drew them deeper – gold was never found.

unearth takes from the historical document, abstracting seduction in fleeting spectral forms both recorded on location and staged in real time. unearth includes video, light works, sound, hand moves, costuming, and a large scale printed curtain.

Collaborators include: Jesse Mejía, Ruben García Marrufo, Allie Hankins, and special guests. Technical assistance and lighting direction from Maggie Heath.

This work will develop from a two week residency in PICA’s black box and culminate in a live performance on Saturday March 9.
